“Discovering more joy does not save us from the inevitability of hardship and heartbreak....Yet as we discover more joy, we can face suffering in a way that ennobles rather than embitters. We have hardship without becoming hard. We have heartbreaks without being broken.”

Desmond Tutu, The Book of Joy

Welcome to The Virginia Yerxa Community Read website. The VYCR seeks to promote reading, and support our community, through an annual book-in-common experience.

This year's VYCR selection is in response to several community members who suggested the same title:  The Book of Joy. Written by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and author Douglas Abrams, The Book of Joy summarizes a rich and delightful week-long conversation between the two spiritual leaders about "lasting happiness in a changing world."

Whether readers simply "dip into" this story, or read it in its entirety, there is something lovely and worthy to be found in The Book of Joy. We invite you to open it up, look within, and have conversations you might otherwise not have.
