“Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

Welcome to The Virginia Yerxa Community Read website. The VYCR seeks to promote reading, and support our community, through an annual book-in-common experience.

Join the Virginia Yerxa Community Read as we celebrate the 2022 book-in-common selection, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Although unsuccessful during his lifetime, Fitzgerald’s novel has become widely considered to be the greatest American novel of all time.

Set in the summer of 1922, The Great Gatsby is both a tragic love story, and a social commentary on American life. Despite depicting an aspect of American life a century ago, the story is as relevant today as it was when it was written. The story of the wealthy, quixotic Jay Gatsby and his obsessive love for Daisy Buchanan is also a cautionary tale of the American Dream in all its hedonism, decadence, and passion.

Virginia Read Day is April 30, 2022.
