Supporting Community Through Reading
Virginia Yerxa Community Read
"That hope was our only joy. And that's how we came to call our little parties Joy Luck."
Welcome to The Virginia Yerxa Community Read website. The VYCR seeks to promote reading, and support our community, through an annual book-in-common experience.
The Virginia Yerxa Community Read is pleased to announce the selection of Amy Tan’s seminal work, The Joy Luck Club as the 2020 book-in-common. A 1989 National Book Awards finalist for Fiction, this is an epic tale of four mothers, four daughters, and four families, whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who’s telling the stories. With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan examines the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between mothers and daughters. As each woman reveals her secrets, trying to unravel the truth about her life, the strings become more tangled, more entwined.
The community is encouraged to read this contemporary classic, and to consider parent-child relationships, family dynamics and cultural legacy.
Virginia Read Day for 2020 has been postponed due to COVID-19.
