Supporting Community Through Reading

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Community Read?

A community read is a project that draws members of a community around the same literary work. Unlike book clubs, the discussion is not limited to one group. Events for the entire community may also occur, such as a presentation from the author or a guest speaker. Any ancillary event that may encourage reading, augment understanding and provoke discussion is appropriate. Community reads have grown in popularity in cities across the country in recent years. The original idea is credited to Nancy Pearl, a Seattle librarian, who initiated “If All Seattle Read the Same Book” in 1998.

How can I become part of the VYCR?

All you need to do is start reading! Once you begin the Virginia Read, you will likely discover others who are reading this year’s selection. If you do not already belong to a book club, the Virginia Read may inspire you to start your own club, or join one that is already established. However, you do not have to be in a book club to enjoy the Virginia Read or the special events that will be connected to each year’s selection. All events are open to the public and, thanks to generous donations from our community free of charge.

How are the VYCR selections made?

Suggestions for VYCR books are received from the community throughout the year. Each summer, a committee of readers reviews the list, discusses possibilities, and reads, reads, reads!  For more information about the VYCR committee and criteria click here.

Is there a book club I may join?

The Colusa County Free Library Literacy Program hosts a community book club in partnership with the Friends of the Colusa County Free Library that is open to anyone. They meet regularly at the Colusa branch. For more information contact visit the Book Club web page

What are some alternatives to joining a book club?

Many readers are too busy to join a book club, but they still enjoy discussing quality literature. With a Community Read, you may discover that you are already part of a group that is reading this year’s selection. An office staff, service club, church group, or any other organization offers a great place to start an annual read, which is a less demanding alternative to a monthly book club.
