Supporting Community Through Reading
Virginia Yerxa Community Read
"And when I sleep, let me dream all the time so that not one little piece of living is ever lost."
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith
Welcome to The Virginia Yerxa Community Read website. The VYCR seeks to promote reading, and support our community, through an annual book-in-common experience.
This year's VYCR selection is Betty Smith's autobiographical novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It is the story of young Francie Nolan, an American-born child of Irish decent living in Brooklyn during the early 1900's. Francie's love of reading and insightful observations help her endure her impoverished childhood, and provide the reader with a refreshing point of view for this period in our country's history. We invite you to read this lovely story, discover its pearls of wisdom, and consider the ways in which education, libraries, and literacy itself have changed since Francie's childhood.
